Keeping Organized

Halloween is on a Sunday this year.  Since this is the case, our little town has moved the holiday celebrations to Saturday.  That is TODAY!  The last time this occurred we missed Halloween all together.  Seriously, we left town for the day and came back to neighbors saying, "Where were you?".  Thank goodness our children were too young to understand what their parents had done, lol.

This year we knew better.  We had all our ducks in a row... NOT.  I have been runnin around like a crazy women trying to get homemade costumes together and helping friends hem or glue theirs.  Needless to say I need to be more organized, lol.  When I found these images from Pottery Barn I couldn't help but to swoon at the beauty of their organization.

I can't imagine a costume being stuck under a bed here or a shirt jammed in between drawers.  Do you?

No, everything is visible.

I don't see any dust bunnies the size of Texas here.  Not that I have discovered a few under my couch, sigh...

Plain perfection I tell ya.  Thank goodness we have role models in this world.  I love you Pottery Barn.  I love you and your organization!

The love of books

I love books.  I love the look of them, I love to hold them, I love the smell of them, and I love to read them!  Yesterday we ran to the book store so I could look for Serena Thompson's new Christmas book.  You know, the Farm Chicks?!

I asked my mama for it for Christmas.  I am so excited about this book that I wanted to flip through it at the book store but it was OUT!  Sold out!  That is okay, while I was looking for that particular book I came across so many beautiful books...

This book is beautiful!  It is loaded with some of the most wonderful recipes.

And this book is beautiful the whole way through it... *sigh*

I really want this book!  It has some of the sweetest felt crafts in it.  Book love, that is what I have.  I love and cherish books so much.  I got to thinking... I would love a book made by the girls for me and for hubby.  Wouldn't is be so sweet if the girls made me a book by themselves and wrote in it with their own words and hand writing?  They can scrapbook some of their favorite pictures and write sweet sentiments of favorite memories or what ever their hearts desire.  And better yet... what if they made a book for grandparents!  I know grandma would LOVE it.  Oh the ideas, I must get them busy, lol.

*All of these images came from Amazon.com
You know you can order books from Amazon fairly cheap.  And if you order $25 or more you get free shipping!  Not all books apply so check to make sure but most do.

Christmas in October!

I have met so many kind people through blogging.  It is such a great group of people supporting one another and encouraging one another.  One of the sweetest girls I have met (virtually) is Lily.  She is such a sweet and caring person.  We began emailing each other just a little bit ago and already I feel a beautiful friendship with her.  She had featured an advent candle one time on her blog and I mentioned how cool it was.  She asked me if I wanted her to send me one.  I thought about it with delight and decided there were some things I would like to send to her.  So we corresponded our addresses and yesterday I received my Christmas in October!

I couldn't wait to open it!

Getting something from over seas is so exciting.  You see, she is from The UK!  I just had to cut out that sticker... it was far too pretty to throw away.  I opened the package and found this inside...

Isn't it a beautiful box?  I told myself I couldn't go any further.  I had to wait for the kids to get home from school.  They would be just as excited as I was.  But I couldn't help myself... I propped open the top of the box and found this...

Okay, that is it.  I wont open any more... but there is a card.  There is no harm in opening a card right?!  I just had to open the card!

Isn't is sooo pretty?!  Okay, now I am satisfied.  I wont open a single thing until the girls get home.  I PROMISE!

Okay, maybe I will just prop open the box.

And the drawers, but that's it!  NO more until the girls get home!

They are home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  One by one we slowly opened each and every gift inside.

We all took turns until we unwrapped everything.  It was so fun!  Just knowing that someone across the world methodically selected each and every one of these gifts and then gingerly wrapped them, all makes me ecstatic.  A sweet friend indeed!

Thank you so much Lily!  I will always cherish this kind exchange.

Lily has a great blog.  Please feel free to check it out HERE.

A Girl After My Own Heart...

Here is my youngest with her Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.  She loves the farm life and everything that comes with it.  She doesn't mind the poop, dirty water, or even chasing the chickens to put them to bed.  She is slightly clumsy and has a huge heart.  And she also loves Christmas.  She doesn't mind the music constantly playing in the background and is always asking for Christmas coloring pages from the Internet.  This last weekend she went to a friends house and they did crafts.  Instead of doing a turkey like the rest of her friends she did Rudolph.  She is a girl after my own heart and I love her sooo much!

More Great Food Gifts For Christmas

I looked up the true definition of homemade and this is what I found:

home·made (hōmˈmādˈ)
adjective
1.Made or prepared in the home: homemade pie.

2.Made by oneself.

3.Crudely or simply made.

There is that word again... ~simply~.  That word has so much power over me.  I am a naturalist by, well, nature.  My dad is the epitome of simple.  He lives extremely modest and with very little.  He chooses to and  I admire him for that.  So to feed my appetite for living simply I have found some more *homemade* gift ideas.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Look at how beautiful these loaves of bread are.  Wouldn't this be a precious gift to receive around Christmas?  I know I would love it.  The smell of fresh bread drives me crazy! Here is a Country Bread recipe from Country Living.

Country Bread
1 package(s) dry active yeast
2 tablespoon(s) sugar
3 cup(s) all-purpose flour, plus more for kneading
2/3 cup(s) warm (110°F) milk
1/2 cup(s) old-fashioned oats
1 1/2 teaspoon(s) fine sea salt
2 large egg yolks
2 tablespoon(s) olive oil
1/4 cup(s) (up to 1/2) warm water
1 egg white, lightly beaten
2 tablespoon(s) old-fashioned oats, for sprinkling

1.In a medium bowl, combine yeast, sugar, 1 cup flour, and milk. Cover bowl with a towel; let yeast mixture rise until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.

2.Using a food processor, grind oats into a fine flour. Add sea salt and remaining 2 cups flour; pulse to combine. With motor running, add yeast mixture, egg yolks, and olive oil. Drizzle in water until dough forms.

3.Remove dough and knead on a lightly floured surface until supple, about four minutes. Place in a large, well-oiled bowl, turning dough to coat with oil. Cover bowl with a towel; let dough rise until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.

4.Heat oven to 400 degrees F. Punch down dough and knead for 1 minute. Divide into 4 equal portions; shape into loaves to fit into 5 3/4- by 3 1/4- by 2-inch pans. Cover pans with a towel for 20 minutes.

5.Place loaves on baking sheet, lightly brush tops with egg white, and sprinkle with remaining oats. Bake until golden, 25 minutes. Cool completely.

Something that would go great with that homemade bread would be some homemade butter.

Homemade Butter
4 cup(s) heavy cream
1 1/2 teaspoon(s) coarse salt
2 cup(s) ice water

1.In a blender on medium speed, mix heavy cream and coarse salt until grainy milk curds begin to form, 8 to 10 minutes. Meanwhile, set aside ice water.

2.Pour milk curds through a strainer (discard liquid) and transfer to a chilled bowl. Pour 1/2 cup ice water over curds and, using a rubber spatula, press out any residual liquid, or whey. Drain water when it gets cloudy, then add more water (1/2 cup at a time), press out liquid, and drain. Repeat 1 or 2 times more until water stays clear.

3.Now you have butter. Divide it into four 3-ounce domed glass dishes (see image) or roll into logs and wrap in parchment paper; refrigerate.

I have heard that divinity is hard to make and I haven't tried it yet.  But when I saw how beautiful this was  I had to mark this as a must try.  I read that a good tip is to have everything ready before you get started.
(countryliving.com)

Peppermint Divinity
4 cup(s) granulated sugar
1 cup(s) light corn syrup
3 large egg whites
1 1/2 teaspoon(s) peppermint extract
6 drop(s) red food coloring

1.Oil a 9" by 9" pan and a spoon and set aside. Combine sugar and corn syrup in a medium saucepan with 3/4 cup water and cook over medium heat until mixture reaches 260 degrees on a candy thermometer, about 20 minutes.

2.Beat egg whites to stiff peaks in a large bowl using an electric mixer set on medium-high speed. Reduce speed to medium and slowly pour sugar mixture into egg whites. Add peppermint and continue to beat until mixture is very thick and fluffy, about 12 minutes.

3.Immediately transfer to prepared pan and smooth using back of oiled spoon. Dot divinity surface with red food coloring and drag a skewer through to create a marbled effect. Let stand at room temperature until firm, about 2 hours. Slice into 1-inch squares. Note: For a simple variation, drop dollops of divinity batter onto an oiled baking sheet, then top with chocolate kisses.

Thank you for stopping by my corner of Christmas!!

A visit from Santa

As a follow up from last post...

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care.  In hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there...

I am still searching for the right place for our stockings.  And when I find the perfect place Santa will be on his way!  We will leave him cookies and milk on the table.  Beside his midnight snack will be a note from our children.  In that note will be words of thanksgiving for everything Santa has given them in the past and well wishes for his long night ahead.  This has been a tradition for as long as we have had children.  And when Santa leaves he will leave a note as well.  His note will let the children know he is proud of them.  He will encourage them to get along with each other and be good to their friends.  He will tell the children to love and honor their parents. And to finish his words of encouragement he will preach that Jesus is the real reason for the season.  He mentions how he prayed before his journey that he would be safe and that every child in the whole world will know Jesus' love.  He then signs his letters with hugs and kisses.

This post is part of the Swap For All Seasons Santa Clause Blog-Along Giveaway.  Santa is making his rounds so feel free to visit A Swap For All Seasons to see where else he has been this October!

The stockings were hung...

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care...

Where do you hang your stockings?  We don't have a typical fireplace like most people do.  Instead we have a cast iron wood burning stove.  It looks just like this one...

(lowes.com)

We use it as our primary source of heat during the winter and I love it.  We keep the window clean so you can see the fire burning bright and it gets so warm and cozy.  The problem is... where to hang our stockings?  We built a back frame away from the wall and covered it with tile.  We did this to vent the hot hair away from the wall.  Every year I balance our stocking hangers and stockings on the ledge of the frame.  While I love the look of the stockings hanging by the fireplace It got me to searching for different places to hang them...

(countryliving.com)

I absolutely love this idea... but we don't have stairs

(countryliving.com)

I think I see a fireplace back there.  And I like the idea of hanging the stockings against the wall... hmm.

(countryliving.com)

Oh how I LOVE this idea!  What a perfect picture.  Only problem is, our piano is in the dining room.  I shall keep looking!!!!

When I found this I couldn't wait to show it to you all.  What a great gift idea to give to children at winter time!  A snowman repair kit...

Snowman Repair Kit

A black plastic or Felt hat

2 googly eyes

3 buttons

a strip of fabric

a couple of small twigs

a twig painted orange

tiny paper snowflakes

Put all of these little goodies into a box that you can decorate.  On a little note attached put the following...

Snowman Repair Kit
Being outside all day and night,

Can make me look a dreadful sight.

I melt, I break, I lose some parts,

Which tends to break some people's hearts,

So here's a repair kit just for you

To make your snowman look brand new!

Isn't that sweet?!
